1300's - Women in Europe wore embroidered bags fastened to their girdle. Is that a purse you're wearing or are you just happy to see me?

1400's - Men and women both wore embroidered purses, some with gold ornaments. Did Leonardo da Vinci have a man purse?

1500's - Most handbags were made of leather with a drawstring closure. For travel, large cloth bags were worn diagonally across ones body.

1600's - Women started decorating their purses with more elaborate needlework in order to attract the opposite sex. Men's pants began to be made with pockets, so they gave up the man purse.

1700's & 1800's - Handbags, now called reticules, became much more popular, especially for carrying items like rouge, powders, fragrances, fans, etc. It was during this century that women began to have the urge to have more than one purse for different social occasions. The handbag had evolved from an item of necessity to an item of luxury.

1900's - Bags became popularly known as handbags. Early in the century, compartments, locks and fasteners were added to purses. During the 1950's many of today's top designers like Chanel, Hermes and Louis Vuitton began their legacy in handbag history.

Messenger - Bag with a long strap to be worn diagonally across the body.
